5. Avoid or reduce lifestyle factors

These include stress, smoking and pollution.

Stress, smoking and pollution are all external factors which can have a negative effect on our hair.

Stress can be good for us in small doses but extreme or chronic stress causes health problems. Stress may affect the hair growth cycle, causing the follicles to shut down which prevents further hair growth. Reducing your stress levels will benefit your body mind and soul as well as your hair.

Smoking is bad for our health and adversely affects hair growth as well. It restricts blood flow (and circulation) to the hair follicles which impacts upon its ability to grow new hair.  Try to cut down on your smoking if you can or even better give up altogether. There are many sources of help for those who would like to give up smoking, I'm sure it must be terribly difficult but if you would like to try to give it up ask your GP they will be able to help point you in the right direction. Your body will thank you and your family and friends will hug and congratulate you for finding the strength and courage to win the nicotine battle.

We can’t always prevent pollution, such as car exhaust fumes but we can take steps to minimise exposure. If you live in an area which is heavily polluted then protect your hair by wearing a hat, you may need to wash it more frequently and finish off with a good conditioner.
